文法-意味 grammar meaning

～にもほどがある

【例文】

こんなちょっとした仕事しごとに三日みっかもかかるなんて遅おそいにもほどがあるよ。
It's beyond slow to take three days for a little job like this.

【意味】
～すぎる

【用法】
ある物事の程度が話し手の許容できる限度を超えていると言いたい時に使われます。多くの場合そのことを非難したい時や不満の意を表したい時に使われる。

【英語】 
" ~nimohodogaaru" is used when a speaker wants to say that the extent of a certain thing is beyond the speaker's acceptable limits. Often used to condemn or express dissatisfaction with the matter.

【文法解説】Grammar point 1:

「～にもほどがある」は「～すぎる」と同じように、ある物事の程度が甚だしいと言いたい時に使われる。「～にもほどがある」はそれに加え、話し手の許容の限度を超えてという意味合いを持つ。

1. 困こまってる友達ともだちを見捨みすてるなんて薄情はくじょうにもほどがある。
（≒見捨てるなんて薄情すぎる）
Abandoning a friend in need is beyond heartless.

また、「～にもほどがある」は、多くの場合そのことを非難や不満の意を表すために使われるので、例文2のようにそれが良い事の場合は基本的に使われない。

2. ずっと好すきだった彼女かのじょと付つき合あえるなんて嬉うれしいにもほどがある。✖
（付き合えるなんて嬉しすぎる。〇）
I am beyond happy to be able to go out with the girl I have always loved.

【文法解説】Grammar point 2:

よく使われる形

例文3のように「〇〇なんて～にもほどがある」の形で使われることがよくある。

3. お葬式そうしきに普段着ふだんぎで来くるなんて常識じょうしきがないにもほどがある。
Coming to a funeral in everyday clothes is so far beyond having no common sense.

It's beyond irresponsible to abandon the work you've been entrusted with halfway through.

・人ひとの物ものをただで借かりようなんて、厚あつかましいにもほどがある。
It's beyond brazen to borrow someone's stuff for free.

・別べつに嘘うそをつけって言いってるんじゃないんだ。言いう必要ひつようのないことは黙だまっとけばいいんだ。お前まえは馬鹿正直ばかしょうじきにもほどがあるよ。
I'm not asking you to lie. If you don't have to say something, just don't say it. You're being too honest.

・社長しゃちょうに対たいしてあんな口くちの聞きき方かたをするなんて無礼ぶれいにもほどがある。
It was beyond rude to talk to the president that way.

・あなたはこんなことも知しらないんだね。いくら若わかいとはいえ無知むちにもほどがあるんじゃない？
You don't even know these things. I know you are young, but you are beyond ignorant, aren't you?

・頼たのんだ資料しりょうまだできてないの？たしかに、ちょとぐらい遅おそくなっても大丈夫だいじょうぶって私わたしが言いったかもしれないけれど、いくらなんでも遅おそくなるにもほどがあるでしょ。
The documents I asked you for are not ready yet? I may have told you that it would be okay if it was a little late, but there is a limit to how late it can be.

・会社かいしゃをクビになった日ひに家いえが火事かじになるなんて、運うんが悪わるいにもほどがある。
It's beyond unlucky that your house catches fire the same day you get fired from your job.

・うちの息子むすこは勉強べんきょうしないにもほどがある。彼かれが家いえで教科書きょうかしょを開ひらいている姿すがたを一度いちどたりとも見みたことがない。
My son is beyond unlearning. I have never once seen him open a textbook at home.

・自分じぶんの恰好かっこうに頓着とんちゃくしないのはいいんだけど、それにもほどがあると思おもうよ。せめて、相手あいてに不快感ふかいかんを与あたえない格好かっこうをすべきだよ。
It's okay to not care about how you dress, but there's a limit to that. At the very least, you should dress in a way that doesn't make others uncomfortable.

・自分じぶんの息子むすこが可愛かわいいのは分わかるけど、溺愛できあいするにもほどがあるよ。私わたしにしたら甘あまやかしすぎだと思おもうよ。
I know you love your son, but there's a limit to how much you dote on him. For me, I'd say you're spoiling him too much.
