文法-意味 grammar meaning

～ てこそ

【例文】

練習問題れんしゅうもんだいは自分じぶんの力ちからで解といてこそ意味いみがある。
Practice questions are only meaningful if you solve them on your own.

【意味】 A てこそ B
A してはじめて B
A しなければ B ない

【用法】
物事の本質・価値等について述べたい時に、「B」が成立するためには「Ａ」が絶対必要だと、強調して述べるために使われます。

【英語】
”~tekoso" is used when you want to state the essence, value, etc. of something, emphasizing that "A" is absolutely necessary for "B" to be established.

【文法解説】Grammar point 1：

「A てこそ B」vs「A なければ B ない」

例文１→例文２のように「～てこそ」は「～なければ～ない」に言い換えることもできます。例文１は例文２に比べてより、「A」の部分（自分で子育てをすること）の大切さを強調した言い方になります。

1. 自分じぶんで子育こそだてしてこそ、親おやのした本当ほんとうの苦労くろうがわかる。〇
Only by raising children yourself can you understand the real hardships your parents went through.

2. 自分じぶんで子育こそだてしなければ、親おやのした本当ほんとうの苦労くろうはわからない。〇
If you don't raise your children yourself, you will never know the real hardships your parents went through.

【文法解説】Grammar point 2:

「てこそ」は、物事の本質・価値について述べる時に使われ、例文３のように後ろに話し手の意志的行為を述べる時には使われません。

3. 親おやがOKを出だしてこそ、私わたしは旅行りょこうに行いきます。✖
（親がを出さなければ、私は旅行にはいかない。〇）
If my parents do not give me the OK, I will not go on the trip.

【文法解説】Grammar point 3:

よく使われる表現

「AてこそB」の「B」の部分によく使われる表現としては以下のような物があげられる。

・～てこそ意味がある。
・～てこそ価値がある。
・～てこそ～と言える。
・～てこそ～できる。
・～てこそ～ものだ。

接続  formation

動詞（て形）に接続して使われます。

例文 example sentences

・政府せいふから給付きゅうふされたお金かねは貯金ちょきんせずに実際じっさいに消費しょうひに使つかってこそ、経済けいざい効果こうかがあるというものだ。
The money given by the government must be actually used for consumption, not saved, to have an economic effect.

・物事ものごとに真剣しんけんに取とり組くんでこそ、人ひとは成長せいちょうする。
People grow only when they approach things with seriousness.

・絆きずなというものは、相手あいてと本音ほんねでぶつかってこそ強つよくなる。
A bond is only strengthened by having an honest discussion with the other person.

・健康けんこうな体からだがあってこそ、仕事しごとも頑張がんばれるというものだ。
It is only when you have a healthy body that you can work hard.

・時ときには非情ひじょうな決断けつだんができてこそ、真しんのリーダーと言いえる。
A true leader must be able to make ruthless decisions at times.

・高価こうかな茶器ちゃきといえども、道具どうぐというものは実際じっさいに使つかってこそ価値かちがある。
Even if it is an expensive tea utensil, a tool is only valuable if it is actually used.

・公正こうせいな報道ほうどうをしてこそ、メディアの価値かちは認みとめられる。
The value of the media is recognized only when it reports fairly.

・私わたしは言葉ことばというのはコミュニケーションの道具どうぐとして使つかってこそ意味いみがあると思おもっています。
I believe that language is meaningful only when it is used as a tool for communication.

・困こまった時ときに助たすけてこその親友しんゆうだろ。
Best friends are the ones who help you when you're in trouble.

・ただ勝かつだけでなく、プレーで観客かんきゃくを魅了みりょうしてこそプロのスポーツ選手せんしゅです。
A professional athlete is one who not only wins, but also captivates the audience with his or her play.
