～と思っていたけど、違っていた。
用法
最初に考えていたことと違う結果や事実が判明した時に、その時までは 「～と思っていた。」というために使われます。
勘違いをしていた、誤解していた、予想と違っていた、と伝える場面などで使われます。

▷ 使われ方
最初の予想や考えと違った時に使われます。事実（起こったこと）が思った通りだった場合には使えません。
A: 可愛い赤ちゃんですね。男の子ですか？女の子ですか？
That's a cute baby. Is it a boy or a girl?
B: 男の子ですよ。
It's a boy.
A: そんなんですね。くりくりした目だから、女の子かと思った。
（※女の子だと思ったけど実際は違った。）
Oh, I thought it was a girl because of the round eyes.

※ナ形と名詞の非過去肯定：だ※「のかと思った」と「の」を入れる形も使われます。
