【文法解説】Grammar point 1：

一緒に使われる言葉

「～に反して」は、主に「予想、期待、予測」といった言葉と一緒に使われます。その他にも、「見方、予期」などの言葉とも使われます。

(1) 大方おおかたの予想よそうに反して、そのチームは惨敗ざんぱいした。
Contrary to most people's predictions, that team failed miserably.

(2) 専門家達せんもんかたちの予測よそくに反して、感染者数かんせんしゃすうは増加し続けた。
Contrary to the predictions of the experts, the number of infected people continued to rise.

(3) 周囲しゅういの期待きたいに反して、彼かれの今こんシーズンの成績せいせきはぱっとしなかった。
Contrary to the expectations of those around him, his performance this season has not been great.

また、「予想、予測、期待」してたことと同じ結果だった場合は、「～通りに」が使われます。

(4) 大方おおかたの予想よそう通りに、そのチームが優勝ゆうしょうした。
As most predicted, that team won the tournament.

(5) 大方おおかたの予想よそうに反して、そのチームは優勝ゆうしょうしなかった。
Contrary to most expectations, that team did not win the tournament.

「そのチームが優勝する」と予想していた場合で、実際にそのチームが優勝した場合は、例文(4)のように「～通りに」を使い、逆に、実際はそのチームは優勝しなかった場合には、例文(5)のように「～に反して」を使います。

その他の形

「～に反して」の「て」は例文(7)のように省略され、「～に反し」となることがあります。

(6) 予想よそうに反して、彼かれはその試験しけんで好成績こうせいせきを得えた。

(7) 予想よそうに反し、彼かれはその試験しけんで好成績こうせいせきを得えた。

・研究けんきゅうの現場げんばでは、予測よそくに反するデータが出でてしまうことはたびたびある。
In the field of research, it often happens that data contrary to predictions are produced.

・予想よそうに反する投票結果とうひょうけっかに、国民こくみんたちは投票とうひょうに不正ふせいがあったのではないかと主張しゅちょうし始はじめた。
With the result of the vote going against expectations, the people began to claim that the vote had been rigged.

・映画評論家えいがひょうろんかの予測よそくに反し、その映画えいがは大だいヒットを遂とげた。
Contrary to the predictions of film critics, the film was a huge hit.

・刑事けいじたちの予想よそうに反し、犯人はんにんは身代金みのしろきんの受うけ取とり現場げんばに姿すがたを現あらわさなかった。
Contrary to the detectives' expectations, the perpetrator did not show up at the scene of the ransom receipt.

・製品開発せいひんかいはつに多大ただいな投資とうしをしたが、その商品しょうひんの売うれ行ゆきは期待きたいに反しあまり芳かんばしくはなかった。
The company invested heavily in product development, but the products did not sell well against expectations.

別の意味

また、動詞「反する」は、規則や命令などに違反するという意味でも使われます。

・彼かれは規則きそくに反する行為こういを行おこったとして処罰しょばつされた。
He was punished for acting against the rules.

・将軍しょうぐんの命令めいれいに反して、その部隊ぶたいは略奪行為りゃくだつこういを続つづけた。
The unit continued its looting against the general's orders.
