【意味・用法】
二つの程度の低いものを比べて、その中では「～」のほうがよいと言いたいときに使われます。
【英語】
"~hougamashida" is used when comparing two things of low degree and say that "~" is better" in that comparison.
【Grammar point】
■ 程度の低い二つのものを比べるとき
「まし」は、程度が低かったり、良くなかったりする二つのものを比べて、その二つの中ではいいということを表す言葉です。したがって、「～ほうがましだ」はどちらも良くないものという前提がの中で使われます。
1. 前の上司のほうがましだった。
※前提は、前の上司も、今の上司もどちらも良くない
My previous boss was better.
2. 数学も英語もいい点が取れなかったが、数学の点のほうがましだった。
I didn't get good scores in both math and English, but my math scores were better.
■ Aくらいなら Bほうがましだ
また、「Aくらいなら B ほうがましだ」の形で、Bに極端な例をだし、そのBのほうがましなほどAが嫌だと、Aが嫌なことを強調して言うために使われることもあります。
3. 彼に謝るくらいなら、死んだほうがましだ。
＝それぐらい彼に謝るのが嫌だという意味
I would rather die than apologize to him.
4. 彼にこのお金をあげるくらいなら、捨てたほうがましだ。
I would rather throw it away than give him this money.
■ まだまし
「まし」は、副詞「まだ」と一緒に使われることもよくあります。この「まだ」は、話し手のそれも十分ではない、良くはないのだがという気持ちを表します。
5. 彼の今回の作品も酷かったが、前回のに比べたら今回のほうがまだましです。
His work this time was also terrible, but this one is still better than the last one.
