【用法】
「AくらいならB」の形で、「A」に話し手が強く拒絶や回避したいと行為を述べ、それと比べると「B」の方がいいと言いたいときに使われる。「B」には「～ほうがいい」「～ほうがましだ」がよく使われます。

【英語】
"A kurainara B" is used when the speaker strongly rejects or wants to avoid an action in "A" and wants to say that "B" is better in comparison. For "B" "hougaii" or "hougamashida" is often used.

【文法解説】Grammar point：

「A くらいなら B」は、「A」をするより「B」のほうがいいなどと言いたいときに使われます。ただし、「くらい」には軽視の意味合いがあり、通常「A」には、望ましくないことや、話し手が強く拒絶や回避したいことなどが入ります。

1. 古ふるい冷蔵庫れいぞうこを修理しゅうりして使つかうくらいなら、新あたらしく買かい換かえたほうがいい。
（≒修理して使うより、新しく買い換えたほうがいい）
It is better to buy a new refrigerator than to repair and use an old one.

2. あんな奴やつの下したで働はたらき続つづけるぐらいなら、いっそ会社かいしゃを辞やめたほうがいい。
I would rather quit the company than continue working for him.

よく一緒に使われる語

「くらいなら」は、「ほうがましだ」「ほうがいい」という文型と一緒によく使われます。その他、「いっそ」「むしろ」といった副詞ともよく使われます。

3. 彼かれに謝あやまるくらいなら、死しんだほうがましだ。
I would rather die than apologize to him.

4. 中途半端ちゅうとはんぱにやるくらいなら、むしろやらないほうがいい。

Wouldn't you rather be Ronin than go to a college like that?

・あんなつまらない映画えいがを見みるくらいなら、寝ねてたほうがましだ。
I would rather sleep than watch such a boring movie.

・あとで何なにでやらなかったのだと後悔こうかいするくらいなら、やって失敗しっぱいした方ほうがましだと思おもうよ。
I'd rather fail than regret later why I didn't do it.

・そんな高たかい商品しょうひんを買かうぐらいなら、こっちの安やすい商品しょうひんをたくさん買かったほうがいい。
Instead of buying such expensive products, you should buy a lot of cheap products over here.

・警察けいさつに捕つかまって刑務所けいむしょで残のこりの人生じんせいを過すごすぐらいなら、いっそ死しんでしまおうと彼かれは思おもった。
He decided that he would rather die than be caught by the police and spend the rest of his life in jail.

備考 notes

「くらいなら」、後ろに「問題ない」「大丈夫だ」といった意味を表す内容がきて、「その程度であれば」という意味で使われる場合もあります。

・ちょっと屋根やねを修理しゅうりするぐらいなら、自分じぶんでもできると思おもいます。
I think I can do it myself if only to repair the roof a little.

・お酒さけを一いち、二杯にはい飲のむぐらいなら大丈夫だいじょうぶなんですが、それ以上いじょうだと酔よっぱらってしまいます。
I can manage a drink or two, but any more than that and I get drunk.all.

・夏なつに日帰ひがえりの登山とざんに行いくらいなら、この靴くつでも十分じゅうぶんだと思おもいますよ。
If you are just going for a day hike in summer, I think these shoes will be enough.
