【例文】

あのチームは優勝ゆうしょうしないまでも、ベスト８エイトぐらいには残のこると思おもっていた。
I didn't expect that team to win the championship, but to stay in the top 8 or so.

【意味】
～というレベルには達しないが、少なくとも

【用法】
「A ないまでも B」は、程度の大きい「A」までは期待/予想されないが、少なくとも「B」という程度は期待されると言う意味で使われます。

【英語】
In "A naimademo B," the speaker suggests that although "A" is not expected, "B" is at least within the realm of expectation.

【Grammar point】

■ 使われ方①

「A ないまでも B」の形で、「A」には、理想などのプラスの方向に程度が大きなことを述べる場合（例１）と、マイナスの方向に程度が大きなことを述べる場合（例２）のどちらにも使われます。

どちらの場合も「B」には、それでも少なくとも期待/予想されることを述べます。

1. 次つぎの大会たいかいでは、優勝ゆうしょうしないまでも、せめて上位じょういには入はいりたい。
In the next tournament, I would like to at least finish in the top ranks, if not win the championship.

2. 彼かれは奥おくさんを殴なぐらないまでも、嫌いやみの一ひとつ二ふたつぐらい言うだろう。
He would probably say a sarcastic remark or two, if not hit his wife.

■ 使われ方②

この文型は、「言わないまでも/言えないまでも」「いかないまでも」の形でよく使われます。

3. この一ヶ月いっかげつで10kgとは言わないまでも、5kgは頑張がんばって痩やせたい。
I want to do my best to lose 5kg, if not 10kg in this one month.

4. 次つぎの選挙せんきょでは過半数かはんすうとはいかないまでも、200議席ぎせきは確保かくほしなければいけない。
In the next election, 200 seats, if not a majority, must be secured.

・このプロジェクトは即刻そっこく中止ちゅうししないまでも、継続けいぞくを検討けんとうする必要ひつようがあると思おもいます。
I believe that this project needs to be considered for continuation if not immediate cancellation.

・今回こんかいのテストは自身じしんで設定せっていした目標点もくひょうてんには届とどかないまでも、平均点へいきんてんは取とれそうだ。
I think I will be able to get an average score on this test, even if I don't reach the target I set for myself.

・来年らいねん、景気けいきは好転こうてんしないまでも、今いまよりも悪わるくなるということはないだろう。
Next year, the economy will be no worse off than it is now, if not better.

～とは言わないまでも

・毎日まいにち連絡れんらくしろとは言わないまでも、せめてたまには連絡れんらくぐらいくれてもいいじゃない。
I don't expect you to contact me every day, but you could at least contact me once in a while.

・あの店みせの料理りょうりはまずいとは言わないまでも、もう一度いちど食たべたくなるというほどの味あじではなかった。
I wouldn't say the food at that restaurant was bad, but it wasn't good enough to make me want to eat there again.

・あなたの勉強べんきょう方法ほうほうが無意味むいみだとは言わないでも、あまり効率的こうりつてきな方法ほうほうだとは思おもえない。
I don't say that your method of study is meaningless, but I don't think it is very efficient.

・毎月まいつき１万円まんえんとは言わないまでも、5000円えんぐらいはお小遣こづかいが欲ほしい。
I don't say 10,000 yen every month, but I would like to have an allowance of at least 5,000 yen.

～とはいかないまでも

・東京大学とうきょうだいがくとはいかないまでも、息子むすこにはそれなりの大学だいがくに進学しんがくしてほしいと思おもっています。
I want my son to go to a good college, if not Tokyo University.

・一週間いっしゅうかんとはいかないまでも、せめて正月しょうがつの三さんが日にちぐらい仕事しごとのことを忘わすれてゆっくりしたほうがいい。
It would be better to forget about work and relax for at least the first three days of the New Year, if not a week.

・完璧かんぺきとはいかないまでも、それなりに納得なっとくのできるレベルまで原稿げんこうを仕上しあげたつもりです。
I think I have finished the manuscript to a level that is satisfactory, if not perfect.
