文法-意味 grammar meaning

A というより B

【例文】

彼かれの成績せいせきが良よくないのは、能力のうりょくの問題もんだいというよりやる気きの問題もんだいでしょう。
His low grades are probably more a matter of motivation rather than a matter of ability.

【意味】
「A」ではなくてどちらかというと「B」

【用法】
何か物事を描写をする際に、「A」ではなく「B」という方が適切だと言いたい時に使われます。また、何か物事の理由を述べる際、複合的な理由がある中で、「A」ではなく「B」のメインの理由だと言いたい時にも使われます。

【英語】
B rather than A / not A, but rather B

”A toiuyori B" is used when you are describing something and you want to say that "B" is more appropriate expression to say instead of "A".

It is also used when you want to say that "B" is the main reason for something, rather than "A", when there are multiple reasons for something.

【文法解説】Grammar point 1：

「～といった方が適切だ」「～といった方が正しい」「～といった方合っている」などがの言葉と一緒に使われることが良くあります。（※必ずしも一緒に使う必要はありません。）

1.私わたしにとって読書どくしょは趣味しゅみというより、私わたしの人生じんせいといった方ほうが合あっている。
For me, reading is not a hobby, but rather I would say it is my life.

2. あの夫婦ふうふが別わかれた理由りゆうは、お金かねの問題もんだいというより性格せいかくの問題もんだいといった方ほうが適切てきせつだ。
The reason for the couple's breakup was more a personality issue rather than a money issue.

・この激辛げきからラーメンの味あじは、もはや辛からいというより痛いたいといった方ほうが適切てきせつだ。
The taste of this extremely spicy ramen is no longer spicy, but rather painful.

・ 彼かれはダイエットして体重たいじゅうが減へったみたいだけど、痩やせたというよりやつれて見みえる。
He seems to have lost weight through dieting, but he looks more gaunt rather than thin.

・今回こんかいの勝利しょうりの理由りゆうは私達わたしたちのチームが強つよかったというより、相手あいてチームが弱よわすぎただけだ。
The reason for this victory was not that our team was strong, but rather that the other team was just too weak.

・彼かれの性格せいかくは優やさしいというより、他人たにんに強つよく物事ものごとを言いえないだけだ。
His character is not gentle, but rather he just can't say things strongly to others.

・今回こんかいの政治家せいじかの汚職事件おしょくじけんは、怒いかりというより、怒いかりを通とおり越こしてあきれはてただけだった。
The recent corruption case of the politician made me beyond angry, but rather, I was just dumbfounded.

・彼自身かれじしんの問題もんだいというより、親おやの教育きょういくの問題もんだいのせいで、彼かれの性格せいかくはひねくれてしまったのだろう。
His character is probably twisted because of his parents' education problems rather than his own problems.

・あの映画作品えいがさくひんは人気にんきとういうより、ただ有名ゆうめいなだけだ。
That movie is not popular, but rather just famous.

・ピアノを習ならいは始はじめたのは自分じぶんからというより、母ははの強つよい勧すすめで始はじめたといったほうが正ただしい。
It is more correct to say that I started learning the piano on my mother's strong recommendation rather than on my own.

・この料理りょうりの見みた目めの美うつくしさは、料理りょうりというより皿さらの上うえの芸術品げいじゅつひんといった感かんじだ。
The visual beauty of this dish is more like a work of art on a plate than a dish.

・私わたしが買かいたかったからというより、妻つまが買かいたかったので新あたらしい車くるまを購入こうにゅうしました。
We bought a new car not because I wanted to buy one, but rather because my wife wanted to buy one.
