文法-意味 grammar meaning

N に堪えない

【例文】

①あの映画えいがは見みるに堪たえない駄作ださくだった。
That movie was a bad movie that I can't bear to watch.

②惜おしい人物じんぶつを亡なくしてしまい、深ふかい悲かなしみに堪たえません。
I can't help but feel deeply saddened by the loss of a very dear person.

【意味】
①（内容がひどいなどの理由で）～続けることができない。
② という感情を抑えることができない。

【用法】
①内容が酷いなどの理由で「～という行為を続けることができない」と、何らかの物の内容が酷いと評価する時に使われる。

②感情を表す言葉と一緒に使い、「～という感情を抑えることができない」その感情の強さを強調して言うために使われます。

【英語】 
①" ~ nitaenai"  is used to evaluate the content of some thing as terrible, in the sense of "I cannot continue the act of ~ because the content is terrible."

②"~ nitaenai" is used with words that express emotion and is used to emphasize the intensity of that emotion, to mean "I can't suppress the feeling of ~".

【文法解説】Grammar point 1:

一緒に使われる言葉

用法①は、一緒に使われる言葉がある程度決まっている。よく使われるものには「見るに堪えない」「聞くに堪えない」などがあります。

用法①：

見るに堪えない、聞くに堪えない、読むに堪えない、鑑賞に堪えない、etc.

 

用法②は、感情を表す言葉と一緒に使われますが、かなり硬い感じのする言葉で主にスピーチや書き言葉として使われます。

用法②：

悲しみに堪えない、慚愧に堪えない、～の念に堪えない、etc.

用法①：

・戦火せんかに巻まき込こまれたその歴史的れきしてき建造物けんぞうぶつは、今いまでは見みるに堪えない無残むざんな姿すがたをさらしている。
Its historic buildings, caught in the fire of war, are now in a state of disrepair that is unbearable to look at.

・彼かれの行おこなった説明せつめいは、私わたしにしてみれば聞きくに堪えない幼稚ようちな言いい訳わけでしかなかった。
The explanation he gave was, to me, a childish excuse that I could not bear to hear.

・新人賞しんじんしょうなどに応募おうぼされてくる素人しろうとが書かいた小説しょうせつのほとんどは、読よむに堪えない駄作ださくである。
Most of the novels written by amateurs that are submitted to the Newcomer Awards are trashy work that are unbearable to be read.

・この品評会ひんぴょうかいに出品しゅっぴんされたワインは飲のむに堪えないものばかりだ。
The wines entered in this competition are all unbearable to drink.

・専門家せんもんかぶってテレビで好すき勝手かってに発言はつげんしている彼かれの理論りろんは、本当ほんとうの専門家せんもんかの議論ぎろんに堪えないものばかりだ。
His theories, which he says whatever he likes on TV as if he is an expert, are all unbearable for real experts to discuss.

・言いうに堪えない数々かずかずの残虐行為ざんぎゃくこういが戦争中せんそうちゅうには行おこなわれていたそうだ。
Numerous atrocities which are unbearable to say were committed during the war.

・彼かれの作品さくひんは、プロの鑑賞かんしょうに堪え得うるだけのものとはとてもじゃないが言いえない。
I can't say that his work is good enough for professional appreciation.

用法②

・私わたしの秘書ひしょがこのような違法行為いほうこういをしてしまったことは、誠まことに慚愧ざんきに堪えないことであります。
I am truly ashamed that my secretary has committed such an illegal act.

・常日頃つねひごろから多大ただいなご支援しえんを頂いただき、感謝かんしゃの念ねんに堪えません。
I am deeply grateful for the tremendous support we receive on a regular basis.

・志こころざし半なかばでお亡なくなりになられた故人こじんのことを想おもうと哀惜あいせきの念ねんに堪えません。
I cannot help but feel sadness when I think of the deceased who passed away in the midst of his ambition.
