こんなことも一人ひとりで出来できないなんて、本当に情なさけないことだ。
You can't even do these things alone. What a pathetic thing it is.

イ形/ナ形 + ことだ

意味・用法
「～ことだ」は、評価や感情を表す言葉と共に文末で使われ、話し手のおどろき・感動・あきれといった感情を表す。また文によっては皮肉を表すこともある。

英語 
  "～ことだ" is used at the end of a sentence with words of evaluation or emotion to express the speaker's feelings of surprise, emotion, or astonishment. It can also be used to express sarcasm in some sentences.

▷ 使われ方

「～ことだ」の「～」の部分には評価や感情を表す言葉が入ります。

＜感情＞
嬉しいことだ、悲しいことだ、ありがたいことだ、恐ろしいことだ、残念なことだ、etc.

＜評価＞
結構なことだ、ご苦労なことだ、すごいことだ、運の悪いことだ、etc.

▷ よく使われる形

なんて～ことだ/なんと～ことだ

1. 友達ともだちが一人ひとりもいないとはなんて悲かなしいことだ。
How sad that you don't have a single friend.

2. 教おしえてる学生がくせい全員ぜんいんが試験しけんに合格ごうかくするなんて、なんと素晴すばらしいことだ。
The students I teach all passed their exams. What a wonderful thing it is.

▷ 皮肉的な言い方

一緒に使う言葉や言い方によっては皮肉を込めた言い方になる場合もあります。

3. 大たいして働はたらきもせず、国くにから給料きゅうりょうをもらえるなんて、それは結構けっこうなことですね。
You don't work much and get paid by the government. What a great thing it is.

接続  formation

 イ形  + ことだ
（もったいないことだ、めでたいことだ）

 ナ形  + ことだ
（結構なことだ、残念なことだ）

 V  + ことだ
（信じられないことだ、困ったことだ）

※基本的には形容詞に接続するが、「信じられない」「困った」など心情を表す一部の動詞とも接続します。

・見みず知しらずの私わたしにお金かねを貸かしてくれるなんて本当ほんとうにありがたいことだ。
I am truly grateful to him for lending me money, even though I am a stranger to him.

・日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうし始はじめて１年ねんでJLPT N1に合格ごうかくするなんて本当ほんとうにすごいことだ。
You passed the JLPT N1 within one year of starting to study Japanese. What an amazing thing it is.

・白昼堂々はくちゅうどうどうとあんな犯罪はんざいが行おこなわれたなんて、本当ほんとうに恐おそろしいことです。
The crime was committed in broad daylight. What a horrifying thing it is..

・あんなに練習れんしゅうをしていたのに怪我けがで試合しあいに出でれないなんて残念ざんねんなことだ。
Even though he had been practicing so hard, he was injured and couldn't play in the game. What a shame it is.

・あの彼かれが社長しゃちょうに抜擢ばってきされたなんて、信しんじられないことだ。
He was selected to be the president of the company. What an unbelievable thing it is.

・親友しんゆうに裏切うらぎられ、絶望ぜつぼうの中なか死しんでいくなんて、なんと悲惨ひさんなことだ。
The guy was betrayed by his best friend and died in despair. What a tragic thing it is.

・楽たのしみにしていた運動会うんどうかいの日ひに大雨おおあめだなんて、なんと運うんの悪わるいことだ。
What bad luck to have heavy rain on the day of the field day I was looking forward to .We are truly in awe of his energy and leadership.

皮肉

・何なにも対策たいさくを取とらずに問題もんだいが解決かいけつするなら、それは誠まことに結構けっこうなことだ。
If the problem is solved without taking any measures, that is truly fine.

・私わたしが困こまっている時ときにはお金かねを貸かしてくれなかったのに、自分じぶんが困こまっている時ときには私わたしにお金かねを貸かしてくださいとは、随分ずいぶん都合つごうのいいことだね。
It is quite convenient for you to ask me to lend you money when you are in need, while you did not lend me money when I was in need.

・頑張がんばったってどうせ勝かてないのに、あんなに一生懸命いっしょうけんめいするとは誠まことにご苦労くろうなことだ。
It is truly a great effort to work so hard when you can't win anyway, no matter how hard you try.
