～でしょう

【例文】

①明日あしたは夕方ゆうがたから雨あめが降ふるでしょう。
Tomorrow it will probably rain in the evening.

②最近さいきん、駅前えきまえにコンビニができたでしょう？
Recently, a convenience store opened in front of the station, right?

【意味・用法】
①「～」が話し手の推量した内容であることを示します。話し手が「おそらく/多分～だ」と思っている場合に使われます。

② 聞き手に同意を求めながら、内容を確認する場合に使われます。この用法の場合は、上がり調子のイントネーションで発話される。

用法①②ともに、カジュアルな言い方は「だろう」。

【英語】
① probably ～　
ー”~deshoou" indicates that "〜" is the speaker's conjecture. It is used when the speaker thinks that "〜" is likely the case. The casual way to say it is “~darou”.

② ~right? / ~, isn't it?
ー”~deshou" is used when the speaker confirms to the listener that "～" while expecting agreement. In this usage, "darou" is spoken with a rising intonation.

【Grammar point】

■用法①：推量

話し言葉では、推量の意味での「でしょう」はあまり使われません。使われる場面としては、テレビ番組などで天気予報を伝えるときや、専門家が何かについて解説するときぐらいです。

（天気予報）

1. 明日あしたは、夕方ゆうがたから雨あめが降ふるでしょう。
Tomorrow, it will probably rain in the evening.

（専門家の解説）

2. このまま戦争せんそうが長引ながびけば、日本経済にほんけいざいにも影響えいきょうが出でるでしょう。
If the war continues to drag on, the Japanese economy will probably be affected.

■ 別の形：「でしょ」

「でしょう」は、近しい人物との会話では最後の「う」は省略され、「でしょ」と発音されることも多いです。この「でしょ」の形であれば、日常会話でも用法①の意味で使われます。

3. 彼かれもそのうちあきらめるでしょ。
He'll probably give up sooner or later.

4. あっ、あの映画えいが、あなたも見みたの？あの映画えいが面白おもしろいでしょ。
Oh, you saw that movie too? That movie is interesting, isn't it?

※ナ形と名詞の非過去肯定の形：だ

用法①：推量（conjecture）

・彼かれはそろそろ大阪駅おおさかえきに着つくころでしょう。
He will probably arrive at Osaka station by now.

・彼かれも今いまごろ、あなたのことを思おもい出だしているでしょう。
He will probably be remembering you by now.

・腕うでの傷きずは1週間しゅうかんぐらいで治なおるでしょう。
The wound on your arm will probably heal in about a week.

・明日あしたの朝あさには、雨あめは止やんでいるでしょう。
The rain will probably stop by tomorrow morning.

・この一週間いっしゅうかんは、晴はれの日ひが続つづくでしょう。
Sunny days will probably continue for this week.

用法②：確認

・ほら、あなたもこの写真しゃしんの場所ばしょに行いったことあるでしょう？覚おぼえてないの？
See, you've been to the place in this picture, right? Don't you remember?

・ほら、このドレスかわいいでしょう？最近さいきん新あたらしく買かったんだ。
See, this dress is cute, isn't it? I newly bought it recently.

・私わたしが作つくったこのオムライス食たべてみて。どう？おいしいでしょう？
Try this omelet I made. How is it? It's delicious, isn't it?

・さっき、勉強べんきょうしなさいって言いったでしょう？
I told you a week ago that homework was due today, didn't I?

・全部ぜんぶ一人ひとりでやったの？大変たいへんだったでしょう？
Did you do it all by yourself? That must have been hard work, right?

備考 note

相手に対して質問を投げかける「でしょうか」が、疑問詞と一緒に使われるとき、最後の「か」が省略され「でしょう」の形で用いられることもあります。

・次つぎの単語たんごの意味いみは何なんでしょう。正ただしいと思おもうものを選択肢せんたくしから選えらびなさい。
（＝何でしょうか？）
