文法-意味 grammar meaning

～ 極まりない/～極まる

【例文】

運転うんてんしている時ときにスマホをいじるなんて危険きけん極きわまりない行為こういはやめてくれ。
Please don't fiddle with your phone while you're driving, it's extremely dangerous.

【意味】
非常に～な

【用法】
「極まりない」は非常に「～」だとその程度が甚だしいことを言うために使われます。主に「失礼極まりない」「危険極まりない」のようにマイナスの意味を持つ言葉と一緒に忠告や批判をするときに使われる。

【英語】 
”~kiwamarinai/kiwamaru" is used to say that something is extremely "~". It is mainly used to give warning or criticism together with words that have a negative meaning, as in "失礼極まりない" or "危険極まりない"

【文法解説】Grammar point 1:

「極まりない」は基本的には以下にあげるようなマイナスの意味を持つ言葉と使われ、主に忠告や批判をする時などに使われる。

失礼、危険、卑劣、幼稚、理不尽、不便、不可解、贅沢、下品、残念、不愉快、無責任、etc.

【文法解説】Grammar point 2:

～極きわまる

「極まりない」は「ない」が付いているが、否定の意味を表すわけではなく程度が甚だしいという意味を表します。そして、同じく「極まる」という言葉も程度が甚だしいという意味で用いられる。

1. 助たすけてもらっておいてお礼れいの一ひとつも言いわないのは失礼しつれい極まる行為こういだ。
（≒失礼極まりない）
It is extremely rude not to say a single word of thanks for the help you have received.

2. 卑劣ひれつ極まるテロ行為こういに加担かたんすることはできない。
（≒卑劣極まりない）
We cannot be complicit in the acts of terrorism which are extremely despicable.

Don't say such a extremely childish thing like, " He got beat up, so I'm going to beat him back.

It's extremely rude to make such a presumptuous request of someone you don't even really know.

It is extremely dangerous to go snow climbing with such light equipment.

I can't do the same job for 30 or 40 years, it would be extremely boring for me.

・サッカーの才能さいのうの塊かたまりである彼かれが、一度いちどのケガで引退いんたいする羽目はめになるとは残念ざんねん極まりないです。
It is a shame that he, a massive soccer talent, had to retire after a single injury.

・人ひとの見みた目めを揶揄やゆすることで笑わらいをとろうとするなんて不愉快ふゆかい極まりない。
Trying to get a laugh by making fun of someone's appearance is extremely unpleasant.

・自みずからリーダーに立候補りっこうほしておきながら、途中とちゅうで辞やめてしまうなんて無責任むせきにん極まりないですよ。
It is extremely irresponsible to run for leadership yourself and then quit in halfway through.

・その政治家せいじかは公衆こうしゅうの面前めんぜんで不適切ふてきせつ極まりない発言はつげんをし、その政党せいとうから除名じょめいされた。
The politician made extremely inappropriate remarks in public and was expelled from that party.

・入退室にゅうたいしつの度たびにいちいち手荷物てにもつ検査けんさを受うけなきゃいけないなんて不便ふべん極まりない。
It is extremely inconvenient to have to go through a baggage check every time you enter or leave the building.
