文法-意味 grammar meaning

 ～（よ）うものなら

【例文】

終電しゅうでんより遅おそく帰かえろうものなら、奥おくさんは家いえに入いれてくれないだろう。
If I were to go home later than the last train, my wife would not let me in.

【意味】
万が一～たら

【用法】
万が一「～」ということをしたら（ということが起こったら）、なんらかの酷い結果になると言いたい時に使われます。

【英語】
”~ youmononara" is used to say that there will be some terrible consequences if someone does "~" or "~" happens.

【文法解説】Grammar point 1：

「～ようものなら」は、主に「～」には話し手がその実現を望んでいない条件が入ります。そして万が一「～」ということをしたら（ということが起こったら）何か良くない結果になると言うために使われます。

1. テストで悪わるい点てんを取とろうものなら、親おやに叱しかられてしまうだろう。
≒テストで悪い点は取りたくないが、万が一取ってしまったら～
If I were to get a bad score on a test, my parents would scold me.

【その他】：

■ 例文2のように「～ようものなら」の代わりに、会話では「～ようもんなら」も使われます。

2. あの上司じょうしの意見いけんに逆さからおうもんなら、この会社かいしゃにはいられなくなるだろう。
If I were to go against that boss's opinion, I would not be able to stay in this company.

・親おやに大学だいがくを辞やめたいなんて言いおうものなら、親子おやこの縁えんを切きられるかもしれない。
If I were to tell my parents that I wanted to quit college, they might cut me off from my parents.

・もし俺おれを裏切うらぎろうものなら、どうなるかよく考かんがえた方ほうがいいよ。
You better think about what would happen to you if you were to betray me.

・大事だいじな結婚記念日けっこんきねんびを忘わすれようものなら、奥おくさんにこっぴどく叱しかられちゃうよ。
If I forget an important wedding anniversary, I will be severely scolded by my wife.

In my time, if you disobeyed your club coach, you were subjected to physical punishment.

・あの先生せんせいに対たいして一言ひとことでも口答くちごたえしようものなら、説教せっきょうの時間じかんが2倍ばいにも3倍ばいにもなっちゃうよ。
If you try to talk back to him even a single word, he will double or triple the time of his lecture.

・田舎いなかの社会しゃかいにおいて、暗黙あんもくのルールを無視むししようものなら、逆ぎゃくに周まわりから無視むしされてしまう。
In rural society, if you try to ignore the unspoken rules, you will be ignored by those around you.

・締しめ切きりの時間じかんに少すこしでも遅おくれようものなら、あの教授きょうじゅはレポートを受うけ取とってくれない。
If you are even a little late for the deadline, that professor will not accept your report.

・もしこんなことが国民こくみんに知しられようものなら、大だいパニックになってしまう。
If the public were to find out about something like this, there would be a huge panic.
