【例文】

彼かれに謝あやまったほうがいいですよ。
You should apologize to him.

嘘うそはつかないほうがいいですよ。
You shouldn't lie.

【意味・用法】
その行為をとるよう（とらないよう）に、聞き手にアドバイスするときに使われる。また、何かに比べてその行為をとる（とらない）ことのほうがよい選択であると言いたいときにも使われる。

【英語】
”V(ta/nai)+ hougaii" is used to advise the listener (not) to take the action. It is also used to say that taking (or not taking) the action is a better choice than the other.

【Grammar point】

「V（た）ほうがいい」は、聞き手にその行動をとるようにアドバイスをしたいとき^[例1]や、その行動が他のことに比べよい選択であるといいたいとき^[例2]に使われます。

逆に、その行動をとらないようにアドバイスをしたいときや、その行動をとらないことが他のことに比べ良い選択であるといいたいときは「V（ない）ほうがいい」を使います。

1. 先生せんせいの話はなしはちゃんと聞きいたほうがいいよ。
Youshould listen to what the teacher has to say.

2. このまま今いまの会社かいしゃで働はたらくより、辞やめたほうがいいかもしれない。
It might be better to quit than to continue working for the current company.

Cigarettes are bad for you so I think you shouldn't smoke.

・あのエリアは危険きけんなので行いかないほうがいいですよ。
That area is dangerous so you should not go there.

・バスで行いくより、電車でんしゃで行いったほうがいいかもしれない。
It might be better to take the train than the bus.

・彼かれの言いうことは信しんじないほうがいいかもしれない。
It might be better not to believe what he says.
