～ともなく/ともなしに
【例文】
①どこからともなくその妖怪は現れた。
The specter appeared out of nowhere.
②彼は隣のカップルの話を聞くともなく聞いていた。
He was absentmindedly listening to the couple next to him.
【意味・用法】
①疑問詞＋助詞とともに使われ、「どこ、いつ、誰」などがはっきりしてないことを表す。
②動詞と使われ、その行為がそうしようと特段意識してされた行為ではないことを表す。
【英語】
① ”interrogative + particle + tomonaku" indicates that “where, when, who, etc.” isn't clear.
② ”V + tomonaku" Indicates that the act was not done with a specific intention to do so.
