V（ます）＋ 尽くす
【例文】
空は重たい雲で覆い尽くされている。
The sky is completely covered with heavy clouds.
【意味・用法】
「V＋尽くす」は、残った部分が無くなるまで「V」という行為を行うと言う意味で使われる。
【英語】
"V+ tsukusu" means to perform the act of "V" until nothing is left.
【Grammar point】
■ 「V＋切る」と「V＋尽くす」の違い
「切る」は一回的な行為を最後までやることを前提とし、「尽くす」は複数事態を前提としている場合が多い。
1. 彼はそのすごい量のビールを飲み切った。
He drank through that tremendous amount of beer.
2. 彼は世界中のビールを飲み尽くした。
He has drunk all kinds of beers from all over the world.
■ 立ち尽くす
「立ち尽くす」は、感動したり呆然となったりでその場所にずっと立ったままでいることを表し、「残った部分がなくなるまで行う」という意味からは少しずれているが、よく使われる表現です。
3. 彼女は彼に振られたあとも、ショックで動けずその場に立ち尽くしていた。
After he dumped her, she stood there in shock, unable to move.
