文法-意味 grammar meaning

N はおろか

【例文】

この２日間ふつかかん、食たべ物ものはおろか、飲のみ物ものさえ口くちにしていない。
For the past two days, I have not had even a drink, let alone food.

【意味】
～はもちろん

【用法】
「A はおろか B」の形で、何らかの程度が甚だしいことを強調して述べるために使われます。「A」に聞き手や一般に想定される（/されやすい）程度、「B」にはそれよりも甚だしい程度が入り、「A という程度を超えて、Bというぐらい甚だしい程度である」というために使われます。

上記の例文で、話し手は「何も口にしていない」ということを強調して述べるためにこの文型を使っています。「A＝(食べ物を食べていない)」という程度を超えて、「B＝(飲み物も飲んでいない)」という程度まで何も口にしていないということを述べています。 

【英語】 
"~ waoroka" is used in the form of "A waoroka B" to emphasize that some degree is extreme. "A" is the degree assumed (/ likely to be assumed) by the listener or in general, and the "B" is the more extreme degree, and is used to say "B, let alone A".

【文法解説】Grammar point 1:

「～はおろか」の後には「さえ/すら/も」などの言葉が一緒に使われます。その他、「まで」や「N＋一つ」といった他の表現が使われる場合もあります。

1. 憧あこがれの芸能人げいのうじんと会あえた時とき、私わたしは話はなすことはおろか目めさえ合あわせられなかった。
When I got to meet the celebrity of my dreams, I couldn't even look at her, let alone talk to her.

2. 昨日きのうから胃痛いつうがひどくて、食事しょくじはおろか水みずすら飲のめない状態じょうたいだ。
Since yesterday, I've been having stomach pains so bad that I can't even drink water, let alone eat.

3. 彼女かのじょは海老えびが大嫌だいきらいで、食たべることはおろか見みることも嫌いやらしい。
She hates prawns, and says she doesn't even want to look at them, let alone eat them.

4. 彼かれはいつも無表情むひょうじょうで、声こえを出だして笑わらうことはおろか笑顔えがお一ひとつ見みせたことがない。
He is always expressionless, never smiling, let alone laughing out loud.

【文法解説】Grammar point 2：

肯定 or 否定？

「はおろか」は否定的なことを述べるために使われることが多いですが、例文4のように、肯定的なことを述べるために使われることもあります。

5. 彼かれの名声めいせいは県内けんないはおろか全国ぜんこくにまで広ひろがっている。
His fame has spread all over the country, let alone the prefecture.

【文法解説】Grammar point 3：

～はもちろん vs ～はおろか

「はおろか」は、基本的に程度が甚だしいということを強調していうために使われます。従って、例文6のように、話し手が何かの程度を強調して言いたいと言う気持ちがない場合には基本使われません。

6. 平日へいじつはおろか土日どにちも営業えいぎょうしています。△
（平日はもちろん休日も～〇/平日だけでなく休日も～〇）
It is open of course on weekdays, but also on Saturdays and Sundays.

・僕ぼくの生うまれた場所ばしょは田舎いなか過すぎて、電車でんしゃはおろかバスさえ通とおっていない。
The place where I was born is so rural that there is no train or even bus service.

・私わたしは現地げんちの言葉ことばはおろか英語えいごさえ喋しゃべれなかったので、その国くにを旅行りょこうした時ときは本当ほんとうに大変たいへんだった。
I couldn't even speak English, let alone the local language, so it was a real challenge when I traveled to that country.

・最近さいきんの若者わかものは結婚けっこんはおろか恋愛れんあいにさえ興味きょうみがないという話はなしを聞きいた。
I heard that young people these days are not even interested in love, let alone marriage.

・その厳きびしい訓練くんれんにおいては、食事しょくじはおろか一滴いってきの水みずを飲のむことすら許ゆるされなかった。
During their rigorous training, they were not allowed to eat or even drink a drop of water.

・仕事しごとが激務げきむすぎて、家いえに帰かえることはおろか仮眠かみんをとる暇ひますらない。
My work is so intense that I don't even have time to take a nap, let alone go home.

・その会議中かいぎちゅうは、意見いけんを言いうことはおろか、口くちを開ひらくことすら憚はばられるような雰囲気ふんいきが漂ただよっていった。
During the meeting, the atmosphere was such that people were afraid to even open their mouths, let alone express their opinions.

・この前まえのJLPT模試もしでは合格点ごうかくてんはおろか、その半分はんぶんもとれなかった。
I didn't even get a passing score, let alone half of it, on the last JLPT practice test.

・ミニマリストの彼かれの家いえには、家電かでんはおろかベッドや机つくえもなかった。
His minimalist home had no bed or desk, let alone appliances.

・このままの成績せいせきでは第一志望だいいちしぼうの大学だいがくはおろか滑すべり止どめの大学だいがくにも受うからないかもしれない。
With my grades as they are, I may not even be accepted to the university of my last choice, let alone the university of my first choice.

・私わたしは子供こどもの時ときから健康けんこうで、大おおきな病気びょうきはおろか風邪かぜ一ひとつ引ひいたことがない。
I have been in good health since childhood and have never had a single cold, let alone a major illness.

備考 others

漢字表記

「おろか」は漢字で書くと「疎か」ですが、この読み方は常用漢字表外であり「おろか」と基本はひらがなで書かれる。
