～以上（は）

【例文】

お祝いわいでお金かねをもらった以上いじょう（は）、何なにかお返かえしをするのが礼儀れいぎだ。
As long as you have received money for a celebration, it is polite to give something in return.

【意味】
～のだから/～からには

【用法】
「A 以上（は） B」の形で、「A」ということは、当然「B」ということになると、言いたいときに使われます。

【英語】
"ijou(wa)" is used in the form "A ijou (wa) B," which means, "Since A, B" or "As long as A, B".

■ 使われ方

「～以上は」は「～」ということに伴う、当然の責任、当然の義務、当然の結果として考えられることを言うために使われます。

1. 彼かれが未成年みせいねんである以上、親おやのあなたにも責任せきにんがあります。
Since he is a minor, you, the parent, are also responsible.

2. 親おやの金かねで大学だいがくに行いかせてもらう以上、勉学べんがくに励はげむのは当然とうぜんのことだ。
As long as your parents pay for you to go to college, it is only natural that you should work hard at your studies.

3. 証拠しょうこが見みつかった以上、彼かれも言いい逃のがれはできないだろう。
Now that the evidence has been found, he will not be able to talk his way out of it.

■ ～上うえは

「～上は」も「～以上は」と同じ意味で使われますが、少し古い感じのする表現で現代の日常会話ではほとんど使われません。書き言葉としては以下の例文のように使われていることもあります。

・芭蕉と一茶との句を比較的多く解釈した上は、明治俳句の復古の功を双肩に荷っている子規の句をも更に若干ここに掲げて見たいと思う。（高浜虚子『俳句はかく解しかく味う』）
Since I have interpreted a relatively large number of haiku by Basho and Issa, I would like to include some more haiku by Shiki, who is credited with the restoration of Meiji haiku.

・あなた。もうこうなった上は、あなたと御一しょには居られません。わたしは一思いに死ぬ覚悟です。（芥川龍之介『藪の中』）
You. Now that this has happened, I cannot stay with you. I am prepared to die at once.

V（普通形）＋以上（は）

ナ形/N ＋である以上（は）

※また、イ形容詞「ない」も使われる。

・私わたしには権限けんげんがない以上、どうすることもできません。
As I do not have the authority to do so, I can do nothing about it.

例文 example sentences

・一度いちどやると自分じぶんで言いった以上は、最後さいごまであきらめずにやりきってください。
Once you have said to yourself that you will do it, please do not give up and do it until the end.

・契約書けいやくしょにサインしてしまった以上、後あとからそんなこと知しらなかったと言いっても無駄むだだ。
Since the contract has been signed, it is useless to say later that you didn't know such a thing.

・学校内がっこうないで起おきた事故じこである以上、学校側がっこうがわにもある程度ていどの責任せきにんがあると思おもいます。
As long as the accident occurred inside the school, I think the school has some responsibility for the accident.

・紛争地帯ふんそうちたいに自みずから行いく以上、どんなことが起おこってもそれは自己責任じこせきにんである。
As long as you voluntarily go to a conflict zone, you are responsible for whatever happens.

・事ことの詳細しょうさいが明あきらかになってない以上、私わたしの口くちから現時点げんじてんでお話はなしすることはありません。
As the details of the situation are not yet known, I have nothing to say at this time.

・どんな仕事しごとであれ、お金かねをもらっている以上はプロなんだから、プロとしての仕事しごとをしてください。
Whatever job you are doing, as long as you are getting paid for it, you are a professional. So do your job professionally.

・じゃんけんに負まけた以上は、文句もんくを言いわずに買かい物ものに行いってください。
Since you lost the game of rock-paper-scissors, don't complain and go shopping.

・妻つまに浮気うわきがばれてしまった以上、この関係かんけいを今いままで通どおり続つづけることは不可能ふかのうだよ。
Now that my wife has found out about the affair, it's impossible to continue this relationship as before.

・一度いちど仕事しごとを引ひき受うけた以上、責任せきにんを持もって最後さいごまでやり遂とげるのが当あたり前まえだ。
Once you take on a job, it is natural to take responsibility and complete it to the end.
