文法-意味 grammar meaning

N を始め /N を始めとして

【例文】

日本にほんには京都きょうとを始はじめ(として）、歴史的れきしてきな観光地かんこうちがたくさんある。
In Japan, there are many historical sightseeing spots, such as Kyoto and so on.

【意味・用法】
「N」に代表的な例を挙げるとともに、他にもたくさんあると言いたい時に使われます。

【英語】
”~ohajime/ohajimetosite" is used to give a typical example to "N" and to say that there are many others.

【文法解説】Grammar point 1：

N ＝ 代表的な例

「N」の部分には、たくさんある中でも代表的な例がきます。例文2のように、二つ以上代表的な例を述べることもできます。

1. 病院びょういんを始め、様々さまざまな公共こうきょうの場所ばしょで喫煙きつえんが禁止きんしされている。
Smoking is prohibited in hospitals and various other public places.
（※公共の場所は色々あるが、その代表的な例として「病院」を出している）

2. 東京とうきょう、大阪おおさかを始め、都市部としぶでは人口じんこうが増加ぞうかしている。
The population is increasing in urban areas, such as Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities.
（※二つ以上の代表的な例を出すことも可能）

【文法解説】Grammar point 2:

～を始めとして

「～を始めとして」も「～を始め」と同じように使われる。

3. A社しゃを始めとして、様々さまざまな企業きぎょうが今回こんかいの災害さいがいの被災者ひさいしゃのために寄付きふをした。
（＝A社を始め、）
Company A and various other companies made donations to help the victims of this disaster.

名詞を修飾する場合は「～を始めとする N」と言う形をとります。

4. コーヒを始めとするカフェインを含ふくんだ飲のみ物ものを飲のみすぎるのは良よくない。
It is not good to drink too much caffeinated drinks, such as coffee and so on.

・ネパールにはエベレストを始め、8000ｍ級きゅうの山々やまやまがある。
Nepal has Everest and other mountains in the 8,000 meter class.

・寿司すしを始め、様々さまざまな日本食にほんしょくが海外かいがいで人気にんきとなってきている。
Sushi and various other Japanese foods are becoming more and more popular overseas.

・少子高齢化問題しょうしこうれいかもんだいの対策たいさくを始め、様々さまざまな社会問題しゃかいもんだいを解決かいけつすることが新あたらしい首相しゅしょうには求もとめられている。
The new prime minister is expected to solve a variety of social problems, including measures to deal with the declining birthrate and aging population.

・パソコン、スマホを始めとする様々さまざまなIT機器ききに我わが社しゃの製品せいひんが使つかわれています。
Our products are used in a variety of IT devices, such as PCs and smart phones and so on.

・大根だいこん、白菜はくさいを始めとする冬野菜ふゆやさいが最近さいきん値上ねあがりしている。
The prices of winter vegetables, such as daikon ,Chinese cabbage and so on, have been rising recently.

・この薬くすりは、熱ねつ、喉のどの痛いたみを始めとする様々さまざまな風邪かぜの症状しょうじょうに対たいして効果こうかがあります。
This medicine is effective against a variety of cold symptoms, such as fever, sore throat, etc.

・村上春樹むらかみはるきを始め、様々さまざまな日本にほんの作家さっかの本ほんが外国語がいこくごに翻訳ほんやくされています。
Books by various Japanese authors, such as Haruki Murakami and others, have been translated into foreign languages.

・今回こんかいの不正会計ふせいかいけいを始めとする一連いちれんの不祥事ふしょうじの責任せきにんをとって、あの会社かいしゃの社長しゃちょうは辞任じにんした。
The president of that company has resigned, taking responsibility for a series of scandals, including this accounting fraud.

・彼かれを始めとして、たくさんの社員しゃいんがその方針ほうしんに反対はんたいした。
He and many other employees opposed the policy.
