(I heard that) The Yamanote Line is currently suspended due to an accident.

専門家せんもんかの話はなしによりますと、50年後ねんごには日本にほんの人口じんこうは今いまの半分はんぶんになるとのことです。
According to experts, in 50 years, Japan's population will be half of what it is today.

【用法】

「～」で述べる内容が、自分の判断や意見ではなく、第三者から得た情報であるということを示すために使われます。フォーマルな表現。

【英語】
”~toiukotoda/~tonokotoda" are used to indicate that what is stated in "~" is not the speaker's own judgment or opinion, but information obtained from a third party. Both of these expressions are used in formal situations.

【Grammar point】

■「そう」と「ということ / とのこと」の違い

「そう」も誰かから聞いた情報を伝える場面で使用されますが、カジュアルな場面の会話では「そう」が、フォーマルな場面では「ということ/とのこと」がよく使われます。「ということ/とのこと」は特に、ニュースなどではよく使われます。

1. ねぇねぇ、来週らいしゅうのイベントって中止ちゅうしになったそうだよ。
Hey, I heard that next week's event has been canceled.

2. 主催者しゅさいしゃの発表はっぴょうによると、来週らいしゅうのイベントは中止ちゅうしされるとのことです。
According to the organizers, next week's event will be canceled.

■ 一緒に使われる表現

その情報源を示すために「～によれば/によると」と一緒によく使われます。

2. 警察けいさつによると、犯人はんにんは人質ひとじちを取とって家いえに立てこもっているとのことです。
According to police, the culprits have taken hostages and are holed up in the house.

3. 大学だいがくの発表はっぴょうによれば、入学志願者にゅうがくしがんしゃは去年きょねんの1.5倍ばいいるということです。
According to the university's announcement, there are 1.5 times as many applicants for admission as last year.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the typhoon is expected to make landfall in Tokyo around 6 p.m. today.

・医者いしゃの話はなしによれば、あと一週間いっしゅうかんもすれば退院たいいんできるとのことです。
According to the doctor, I will be able to leave the hospital in another week.

・この美術館びじゅつかんの建設けんせつには莫大ばくだいな費用ひようがかかったということです。
It is said that the construction of this museum cost an enormous amount of money.

・昔むかしからここに住すむ人ひとの話はなしによると、50年前ねんまえ、このあたりは何なにもないただの田舎いなかだったということです。
According to an old resident of the area, 50 years ago, the area was just an empty countryside.

・近年きんねん、仕事しごとが見みつからず、犯罪はんざいに手てを染そめる若者わかものが増ふえているとのことです。
In recent years, an increasing number of young people are turning to crime because they cannot find work.
