A は B ほど～ない

【例文】

僕ぼくは彼かれほどケチじゃない。
I'm not as stingy as he is.

【意味】
A は B に比べたら～じゃない

【用法】
「AはBほど～ない」は、「AはBの程度に比べたら～ない」と言う意味で、「Aは～ない」ということが「B」と比べてそうであると言いたいときに使われる。

この文型での「ほど」はその前の部分である「B」が比較対象であることを示す。

【英語】is not as ~ as
”A wa B hodo ～nai” means "A is not as ～ as B". It is used to say that "A is not ~" in comparison with "B."

【Grammar point】

その後ろで述べる内容・評価が何に比べてそうなのかということを示すために使われます。

1. 山田やまださんは、背せが高たかくない。
Mr. Yamada is not tall.

2. 山田やまださんは、[鈴木すずきさんほど]背せが高たかくない。
Mr. Yamada is not as tall as Mr. Suzuki.

■「より～ない」と「ほど～ない」の違い

「A は B より～ない」は、「A」と「B」の程度を単に比較する時に使われるが、「A は B ほど～ない」は「B」が程度が高いという前提の中で「A」と比較する場合に使われます。

3. このカレーは、あのカレーよりおいしくない。
This curry is not as good as that curry.

4. このカレーは、あのカレーほどおいしくない。
（Both curries are goods, but）this curry is not as good as that curry.

5. 今日きょうは昨日きのうほど寒さむくない。
（＝今日も寒いが、昨日よりは寒くない）
(It's cold today too, but) it's not as cold as yesterday.

6. 彼かれは私わたしほど背せが高たかくない。
（＝彼も背が高いが、私よりは高くない）
(He's tall too, but) he's not as tall as me.

V（普通形） + ほど
（思うほど、思っているほど、思ったほど）

例文 example sentences

・私わたしは彼かれほど成績せいせきが良よくないので、あの大学だいがくに一緒いっしょに合格ごうかくすることはできないかもしれない。
My grades are not as good as his, so I may not be able to get into that university with him.

・高校こうこうの時ときの友達ともだちは、大学だいがくの時ときの友達ともだちほど頻繁ひんぱんに連絡れんらくはとっていない。
I don't keep in touch with my high school friends as often as I do with my college friends.

・その映画えいがは、彼かれが言いうほど面白おもしろくはなかった。
The movie wasn't as interesting as he said

・あなたが思おもっているほど、彼かれは怖こわい人ひとじゃないので安心あんしんしてください。
Don't worry, he's not as scary as you think he is.

・私わたしが考かんがえていたほど、事態じたいは深刻しんこくではなかった。
The situation was not as serious as I had thought it would be.

・あのテレビドラマの続編ぞくへんは、最初さいしょのシリーズほど面白おもしろくはなかった。
The sequel to that TV drama was not as interesting as the first series.

・この新あたらしい部屋へやは引ひっ越こす前まえの部屋へやほど広ひろくない。
This new room is not as big as the one I had before I moved in.

・一人暮ひとりぐらしは想像そうぞうしていたほどさみしいものではなかった。
Living alone was not as lonely as I had imagined it would be.

・転職先てんしょくさきの会社かいしゃは今いまの会社かいしゃほど給料きゅうりょうが高たかくないが、今いまよりやりたい仕事しごとができそうだ。
The company I'm switching to won't pay as much as my current company, but I'll be able to do more of the work I want to do.

・N１の試験問題しけんもんだいを見みてみたが、思おもったほど難むずかしくなさそうだ。
I took a look at the N1 exam questions, and they didn't seem as difficult as I thought they would be.
